March is still a
dry month in northern Colombia, in particular, it is very dry and sunny on the north coast (see Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Riohacha). On the islands of San Andrés and Providencia, in the Caribbean Sea, we are in the driest period of the year, which will last until April.
In the southernmost part of the Caribbean coast, in the department of Antioquia, it is the last month of the least rainy period, which runs from January to March.
On the other hand, the rains increase on the Andes, where March is already a moderately
rainy month, while it is very rainy on the Pacific coast (see Chocó department, Tumaco), where it rains all year round, and in the areas close to or south of the Equator, in the southern part of the Amazon forest (see Leticia), where actually we are in the rainiest season.
Temperatures in Colombia vary little over the months, and at low altitudes it is hot all year round, while on the Andes, the temperature decreases with altitude. In the inland areas of the north (see Montería, Valledupar), and in the east, in the savannah area called Llanos (see Arauca, Puerto Carreño, San José del Guaviare), we are in the period in which heat waves are more intense, and the temperature can reach 40 °C (104 °F). However, it can also get
very hot on the Caribbean coast, around 35 °C (95 °F).
The
sea in Colombia is warm enough for swimming all year round, both in the north (Caribbean Sea) and in the west (Pacific Ocean).
