Climate chart - Ipiales
In Ipiales, there is a temperate, or subtropical mountain climate, mostly cool and cloudy.
The city is located in southwestern Colombia, at nearly one degree north latitude, in the department of Nariño, at 2,900 meters (9,500 feet) above sea level, near the border with Ecuador, beyond which lies the city of Tulcán. Indeed, Ipiales is the Colombian city of some importance located at the highest altitude, even more so than Bogotá and the nearest city of Pasto.
We are in the so-called "knot of the Pastos", the mountainous area where the Andes mountain range forks into two branches, and which also includes the Ecuadorian province of Carchi. In the area there are some volcanoes, including the Cumbal, 4,764 meters (15,630 feet) high, and the Chiles, of 4,707 meters (15,442 ft).
The rains are not abundant, but they are frequent all year round. From June to September, we can consider it the dry period, in which however there are frequent drizzles.
At night it can get cold all year round, in fact the temperature can approach freezing. The sun shines quite rarely.
