In April, the rainy season in Colombia advances from south to north. In fact, the sun passes its zenith at noon, increasing the rainfall, in the areas that were dry in the previous months.
However, rainfall is still quite rare in the northern part of the coast of the Caribbean Sea (see Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Riohacha). On the islands of San Andrés and Providencia, in the Caribbean Sea, April is the last month belonging to the dry season.
In the
Andes (see Bogota, Cali, Medellín), we are in one of the two rainy seasons. The rains are particularly abundant on the eastern side, at the foot of the mountains (see Villavicencio). The rains are also frequent and abundant on the Pacific coast (see Chocó department, Tumaco), where it rains all year round, and in the Amazon rainforest (see Leticia).
Temperatures in Colombia vary little over the months, and at low altitudes it is hot all year round, while in the Andes the temperature decreases with altitude. In the inland areas of the north (see Montería, Valledupar), at low altitudes, we are in the period in which heat waves are more intense, and the temperature can reach 40 °C (104 °F). However, it can get
very hot even on the Caribbean coast, around 36 °C (97 °F).
The
sea in Colombia is warm enough for swimming all year round, both in the north (Caribbean Sea) and in the west (Pacific Ocean).
