January is the central month of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In Venezuela, a country located just north of the Equator, it is
hot, dry and sunny almost everywhere.
Although
temperatures do not vary much throughout the year, January is the coolest month of the year in the north (see Caracas and the coast of the Caribbean Sea) and in the northwest, in the mountains (see Mérida). In Caracas, winter nights can be cool, and fog can form.
Instead, in the center-south, closer to the Equator (see the llanos and the Amazon forest), temperatures are higher, and the coolest month is July (at the height of the rainy season). In the llanos (see San Fernando de Apure) it is very hot, and the temperature can exceed 35 °C (95 °F). However, sometimes it can get very hot even in the north, with highs of around 35 °C (95 °F), especially in the cities that are not on the coast (see Maracaibo, Valencia).
We are almost everywhere in the dry season, and therefore the
rains are rare, however, in the south-east, in the macro-region called Venezuelan Guayana, occupied by the forest, there are areas where the climate is equatorial and it rains even in this month, and in particular, in the extreme east, in the Orinoco delta area, where there is a relatively dry season from February to April, and in the extreme south, in the Amazon forest (see San Carlos de Río Negro), where the rains are frequent and abundant even in this period, although less than in the rest of the year.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming, even though we are in the period of the year when it is relatively cooler.
