The climate of Puerto Ayacucho is tropical, with a rainy period from April to November and a dry period from December to March. From May to August, the rains are very abundant, at monsoon level, although they decrease in El Niño years.
Temperatures are high all year round, but especially from January to April, before the rains, when they can reach 38/39 °C (100/102 °F). From June to August, at the height of the rainy season, the temperatures drop a bit, especially during the day, but the humidity reaches the maximum values of the year.
The city is the capital of the Venezuelan state of Amazonas and is located at 5 degrees north latitude, on the banks of the Orinoco River, on the border with Colombia, and at the limit between the savannah area (llanos) to the west and the Amazon rainforest to the east.
