Climate chart - Coro
The climate of Coro (or Santa Ana de Coro) is tropical arid, with a dry period from January to April, but with rare and irregular rains even in the rest of the year. However, the wettest period is from October to December.
The city is the capital of the state of Falcón and is located in the northwest of Venezuela, at 11 degrees north latitude, near the coast of the Caribbean Sea. Just to the north is the Paraguaná peninsula, connected to the mainland by an isthmus. At the beginning of the isthmus lies the Médanos de Coro National Park, which is home to large sand dunes.
To the south of the city there is a small mountain range, the Sierra de Coro (or Sierra de Falcón), whose altitude reaches about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet).
We are in a very hot and arid area due to the winds from the south, which blow from the northernmost part of the Andes, and which alternate with the trade winds coming from the east. Actually, a moderate wind blows all year round, but especially from January to August.
Coro lies in the southernmost part of the trajectory of hurricanes, which can sometimes affect the north coast of Venezuela, although more rarely than in the central and northern part of the Caribbean. However, it cannot be ruled out that a hurricane or tropical storm can bring strong winds and abundant rains here as well. The hurricane season runs from June to November, although they are more likely from August to October.
