December is the first month of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In Venezuela, a country located just north of the Equator, it is in many areas a
hot, dry and sunny month. However, in the far north, on the coast of the Caribbean Sea and on the islands,
moderate rains still occur.
This happens because we are at the beginning of the period in which the north-east trade winds blow, bringing rainfall because the sea is still very warm. Actually, November and December are generally the rainiest months in the Leeward Antilles, both in the Venezuelan ones (see Los Roques, Isla Margarita), and in those belonging to other countries (such as the ABC islands).
However, the rains are even more abundant in the southeast, in the macro-region called Venezuelan Guayana, occupied by the forest, and in particular, in the extreme east, in the Orinoco delta area, and in the extreme south, in the Amazon forest (see San Carlos de Río Negro).
Although the
temperatures do not vary much throughout the year, in December, the coolest period of the year begins in the north (see Caracas and the coast of the Caribbean Sea) and in the northwest, in the mountains (see Mérida). In Caracas, winter nights can be cool, and fog can form.
Instead, in the center-south, closer to the Equator (see the llanos and the Amazon forest), temperatures are higher, and the coolest month is July (at the height of the rainy season). In the llanos (see San Fernando de Apure) it is very hot, and the temperature can reach 35 °C (95 °F). However, sometimes it can get very hot even in the north, with highs of around 35 °C (95 °F), especially in the cities that are not on the coast (see Maracaibo, Valencia).
The
sea is warm enough for swimming.
