On the coast of Peru, September is the last month of winter, the cool and dry season, while in inland areas it is the first month of spring.
In the east, in the
Amazon forest (see Iquitos, Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonado), where it is hot all year round, September is a
hot and muggy month. The rains are quite frequent and abundant in the north (see Iquitos), while in the center-south (see Puerto Maldonado), where they were rarer in the previous months, they begin to increase. Furthermore, we are in the period in which the most intense
heat waves of the year can occur, during which the temperature can reach 38/39 °C (100/102 °F).
In the
Andes (see Cajamarca, Cusco, Machu Picchu), where daytime temperatures are stable throughout the year, night temperatures are still low, however, they increase slightly compared to August, especially in the south, which the coldest area in winter. Generally, they only drop below freezing at the highest altitudes, above 3,500 meters (11,500 feet).
On the
coast, where due to the cool Humboldt Current the climate is arid or desert, but also characterized by cloud cover and mists, it is still the coolest time of the year. In the extreme north (see Tumbes), the climate remains quite warm, however, in this month it never rains here either. In the central-southern part of the coast, the climate is quite cool, moreover, especially in the central part (see Lima), the sky is almost always cloudy and there is a mist, the garúa, which can deposit moisture on the ground.
In the southern part of the coast (see Pisco, Marcona, Ilo), a bit of
cool air can arrive, which can bring the night temperature down to about 10 °C (50 °F).
The
sea is cool for swimming even in the far north, while in the center-south it is quite cold.
However, the sea gets warmer than usual in El Niño years, and cooler than usual in La Niña years.
