October in Peru is a spring month. The sun passes at its zenith at noon throughout the month, from north to south, bringing an increase in temperature and rain, except on the coast, which is affected by a cool current.
To the east, in the
Amazon forest (see Iquitos, Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonado), where it is hot all year round, October is a
hot and muggy month, and it is, albeit slightly, the hottest of the year together with November. The rains increase and are frequent and abundant, though not as in the summer months. Furthermore, we are in the period in which the most intense
heat waves of the year can occur, during which the temperature can reach 38/39 °C (100/102 °F).
In the
Andes (see Cajamarca, Cusco, Machu Picchu), daytime temperatures are stable throughout the year, however, the highest temperatures of the year often occur in October and November. Night temperatures are by now higher than in winter, and only drop below freezing at the highest altitudes, above 3,500 meters (11,500 feet).
On the
coast, where due to the cool Humboldt current the climate is arid or desert, but also characterized by cloud cover and mists, temperatures rise slightly, but we are still in the relatively cool period. Only in the far north (see Tumbes) it is hot, however, in this month it never rains here as well.
In the southern part of the coast (see Pisco, Marcona, Ilo) some
cool air can arrive, which can bring the night temperature down to about 10 °C (50 °F).
The
sea is cool for swimming even in the far north, while in the center-south it is quite cold.
However, the sea gets warmer than usual in El Niño years, and cooler than usual in La Niña years.
