August in Peru is a month belonging to winter, which is the cool and dry season in this country.
To the east, in the
Amazon forest (see Iquitos, Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonado), where it is hot all year round, August is a
hot and muggy month. The rains are quite frequent and abundant in the north (see Iquitos), while in the center-south (see Puerto Maldonado) they are quite rare. In this month, the period with the most intense
heat waves of the year begins, during which the temperature can reach 37/38 °C (99/100 °F).
In the
Andes (see Cajamarca, Cusco, Machu Picchu), where daytime temperatures are stable throughout the year, we are in the period, which lasts until September, when nighttime temperatures are lower. However, temperatures rise slightly compared to July, especially in the south, ie the coldest area. At the highest altitudes it gets cold at night, and especially in the south and above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), the temperature can drop below freezing (see Cusco, Juliaca). On the other hand, the weather is dry and sunny.
On the
coast, where the climate is arid or desert due to the cool Humboldt Current, but also characterized by cloud cover and mists, August is the coolest month of the year. In the far north (see Tumbes), the climate remains quite warm, but less than in the previous months, moreover, it never rains here either. In the central-southern part of the coast, the climate is quite cool, moreover, especially in the central part (see Lima), the sky is almost always cloudy and there is a mist, the garúa, which can deposit moisture on the ground.
A bit of
cool air can arrive in the south, which can bring the night temperature down to about 10 °C (50 °F) both on the coast (see Pisco, Marcona, Ilo) and in the forest (see Puerto Maldonado).
The
sea is cool for swimming even in the far north, while in the center-south it is quite cold.
However, the sea gets warmer than usual in El Niño years, and cooler than usual in La Niña years.
