July in Peru is a month belonging to winter, which is the cool and dry season in this country.
To the east, in the
Amazon forest (see Iquitos, Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonado), July is a
hot and muggy month, however, we are in the relatively cool and dry period. The rains are quite frequent and abundant in the north (see Iquitos), while in the center-south (see Puerto Maldonado) they are quite rare.
In the
Andes (see Cajamarca, Cusco, Machu Picchu), where daytime temperatures are stable throughout the year, we are in the period, which lasts until September, when nighttime temperatures are lowest. At the highest altitudes it gets cold at night, and especially in the south and above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), the temperature can drop below freezing (see Cusco, Juliaca). On the other hand, the weather is dry and sunny.
On the
coast, where due to the cool Humboldt current the climate is arid or desert, but also characterized by cloud cover and mists, July is a warm month only in the far north (see Tumbes), where the average is 24 °C (75 °F), while in the central-southern part it is quite cool. Furthermore, especially in the central part (see Lima), the sky is almost always cloudy and there is a mist, the garúa, which can deposit moisture on the ground.
A bit of
cool air can arrive in the south, which can bring the night temperature down to about 10 °C (50 °F) both on the coast (see Pisco, Marcona, Ilo) and in the forest (see Puerto Maldonado).
In El Niño years, the northern part of the coast (see Tumbes, Talara) gets hotter, and when the phenomenon is most intense, it can rain even in this month.
The
sea is cool for swimming even in the far north, while in the center-south it is quite cold.
However, the sea gets warmer than usual in El Niño years, and cooler than usual in La Niña years.
