May is a
rainy month in much of Colombia, and on average it is the second wettest month after October. It is the first month in which the rains are also frequent in the northern part of the coast of the Caribbean Sea (see Barranquilla, Cartagena) and on the islands of San Andrés and Providencia. The only area with little rainfall is the arid peninsula of la Guajira, east of Riohacha.
In the
Andes (see Bogota, Cali, Medellín), we are in one of the two rainy seasons, and in some areas this is the wettest month of the year. The rains are particularly abundant on the eastern side, at the foot of the mountains (see Villavicencio). Instead, the rains are not very abundant in the area of the Andes located between the two cordilleras (see Bogotá, Tatacoa).
The rains are also frequent and abundant on the Pacific coast (see Chocó department, Tumaco), where it rains all year round, and in the Amazon forest (see Leticia).
Temperatures in Colombia vary little over the months, and at low altitudes it is hot all year round, while in the Andes the temperature decreases with altitude. In the inland areas of the north, at low altitudes, but also on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, it can get
very hot.
The
sea in Colombia is warm enough for swimming all year round, both in the north (Caribbean Sea) and in the west (Pacific Ocean).
