October in Brazil is the second month of spring in the center-south, while in the center-north, where it is hot all year round, we cannot properly speak of seasons, except for what concerns the rains.
In many areas of Brazil, especially the Amazon and the central-southern interior areas (see Brasília, Goiânia), where summer is the rainy season, in October the rains increase and become quite frequent. Instead, we are still in the relatively dry season on the northern coast (see São Luís, Parnaíba) and on the north-eastern one (see Fortaleza, the archipelago of Fernando De Noronha, Natal, Joao Pessoa). Furthermore, the dry season begins in the part of the coast facing south-east (see Recife, Maceió, Aracaju), as well as in the far north, in the state of Roraima (see Boa Vista). It is also the dry season in the arid northeast, in the Sertão, where this is the hottest month of the year.
At sea level, the
average temperature is generally 28/29 °C (82/84 °F) in the north and in the Amazon rainforest, 30/31 °C (86/88 °F), in the inland and arid areas of the north-east, while it is 26.5 °C (80 °F) in Salvador, and 24 °C (75 °F) in Rio de Janeiro, near the Tropic. In the south, temperatures are lower, in fact the average is 21.5 °C (71 °F) in Florianópolis, on the southern part of the coast, and 18 °C (64.5 °F) in Rio Grande, in the extreme south.
If we exclude the extreme south, October is the month in which the
heat waves are most intense, especially in the north-east and the inland central-southern areas, where the temperature can reach 42/43 °C (108/109 °F), at least at low altitudes.
As for
cold air irruptions, they are quite rare, however, in the extreme south the temperature can still drop to around 5 °C (41 °F).
The
sea is warm enough for swimming in the center and north, it is all in all acceptable but not warm at the height of the Tropic (see Rio De Janeiro), while it is still cold in the south.
