September in Brazil is the first month of spring in the center-south, while in the center-north, where it is hot all year round, we cannot properly speak of seasons, except as regards to the rains. In many areas of Brazil, we are at the end of the dry season, and in any case, on average, September is the driest month of the year after August and on par with July.
At sea level, the
average temperature is generally 28/29 °C (82/84 °F) in the north, and also in the Amazon rainforest, where we are at the end of the relatively dry season and it is the hottest time of the year. The average is even higher, about 30 °C (86 °F), in the inland and arid areas of the northeast, while it is 25.5 °C (78 °F) in Salvador, and 23 °C (73.5 °F) in Rio de Janeiro, near the Tropic. In the south, the climate is still quite cool, in fact the average is 19.5 °C (67 °F) in Florianópolis, in the southern part of the coast, and 16 °C (61 °F) in Rio Grande, in the extreme south.
In this period, there can be
heat waves in inland areas, especially in the center (see Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso del Sul) and in the north-east, where the temperature can reach and exceed 40 °C (104 °F).
The
rains are abundant in the westernmost part of the Amazon, while they are still quite rare in the eastern part. On the coast, we are in the dry season in the northern part (see São Luís, Parnaíba, Fortaleza, the archipelago of Fernando De Noronha), while rainfall is quite abundant in the south-eastern part (see Recife, Maceió, Ilhéus). Even in the south, where winter is a rainy season due to the collision of air masses, the rains continue abundantly in September.
Also in September there can be outbreaks of
cold air in the south, which can bring the night temperature down to about freezing, although this happens more rarely than in the previous months.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming in the center and north, it is all in all acceptable but not warm at the height of the Tropic (see Rio De Janeiro), while it is cold in the south.
