May in Brazil is the last autumn month in the center-south, while in the center-north, where it is hot all year round, we cannot properly speak of seasons, except for what concerns the rains.
At sea level, the
average temperature is 27/28 °C (81/82 °F) in the center-north, while it is 23.5 °C (74.5 °F) in Rio de Janeiro, near the Tropic, 20 °C (68 °F) in Florianópolis, on the southern part of the coast, and 16.5 °C (61.5 °F) in Rio Grande, in the extreme south.
The
rains are abundant in the vast Amazon basin, even though they begin to decrease in the westernmost part (see Cruzeiro do Sul). The rains are also abundant on the north-eastern part of the coast (see the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, Fortaleza, Natal, Joao Pessoa, Recife). Even further south, in the area where the coast is exposed to the southeast (see Maceió, Aracaju, Salvador), the rains are abundant.
Instead, in the inland and arid areas of the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais, we are in the dry season, but also in the inland areas of the center-south (see Goiânia, Brasília, Belo Horizonte), where the dry season begins, the rains are rare.
In the south there can be
cold air irruptions, which can bring the night temperature below 5 °C (41 °F), especially in the second half of the month.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming up to the latitude of the Tropic (see Rio De Janeiro), while further south it gradually gets cooler.
