June in Brazil is the first winter month in the center-south, while in the center-north, where it is hot all year round, we cannot properly speak of seasons, except for what concerns the rains.
At sea level, the
average temperature is 27/28 °C (81/82 °F) in the north, while it is 25.5 °C (78 °F) in Salvador, and 23 °C (73.5 °F) in Rio de Janeiro, near the Tropic. In the south, the winter is quite cool, in fact the average is 18.5 °C (65 °F) in Florianópolis, in the southern part of the coast, and 14 °C (57 °F) in Rio Grande, in the extreme south.
Typically, winter in Brazil is the driest season, though not everywhere. The
rains in June are very abundant in the small area north of the Equator, in the states of Roraima and Amapá (see Oiapoque, Boa Vista, Macapá) and in the easternmost part of the coast (see Natal, Joao Pessoa, Recife, Maceió), where they can exceed 300 mm (12 in). Instead, in the Amazon forest, although there is no real dry season, the rains are less abundant than in the previous months. In the center-south, the rains are generally rare, except in the southernmost states (Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina), where the clash between air masses produces disturbances.
In the south there can be
cold air irruptions, which can bring the night temperature down to about zero degrees Celsius (32 °F). Sometimes, in the southern cities located at high altitudes (see Curitiba, Passo Fundo, São Joaquim, Lages), it can even snow.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming in the center-north, it is all in all acceptable at the latitude of the Tropic (see Rio De Janeiro), while it is cold in the south.
While in the north, crossed by the Equator, the
day lasts 12 hours all year round, in the center-south, June and July are the months in which the days are shortest, and they last 10 hours in far south.
