March in Brazil is the last summer month in the south. In the center-north, where it is hot all year round, one cannot properly speak of seasons, except as regards to the rains. March is a
hot, muggy and rainy month almost everywhere, except in the far north, in the state of Roraima (see Boa Vista), where we are at the end of the dry season.
At the end of the month, the sun passes its
zenith at the Equator, and therefore the sun's rays become stronger, especially in the north. Rainfall is particularly abundant in the vast Amazon basin, where it can exceed 400 mm (16 in) per month, and this is often the wettest month of the year (see Belém).
Even in the north-east, where the rains were not too abundant in January and February (see Fernando de Noronha, Natal, Joao Pessoa, Recife), they increase significantly in this month. The rains remain around 100 mm (4 in) only on the coast south of Rio de Janeiro.
At sea level, the
average temperature is 27/28 °C (81/82 °F) in most of Brazil, although it reaches 29.5 °C (85 °F) in the small area north of the equator, where it is still the season dry (see Boa Vista), and drops to 24.5/25 °C (77 °F) in the south (see Florianópolis, Porto Alegre), and to 22/23 °C (73.5 °F) only in the southern tip (see Rio Grande, Santa Vitoria do Palomar).
Throughout the country,
heat waves can occur, during which the temperature can reach 38/40 °C (100/104 °F), especially at low altitudes and in the inland areas of the east and south.
However, sometimes cool air can arrive in the south, so that the night temperature can drop below 15 °C (59 °F).
The
sea is warm enough for swimming anywhere, even though in the extreme south (see Rio Grande), the water temperature drops to 23.5 °C (74.5 °F).
