July in Brazil is the central month of winter in the center-south, where it is generally the coldest month, while in the center-north, where it is hot all year round, we cannot properly speak of seasons, as regards to the rains.
At sea level, the
average temperature is 27/28 °C (81/82 °F) in the north, while it is 25 °C (77 °F) in Salvador, and 22.5 °C (72.5 °F) in Rio de Janeiro, near the Tropic. In the south, the winter is quite cool, in fact the average is 17.5 °C (63.5 °F) in Florianópolis, on the southern part of the coast, and 13 °C (55.5 °F) in Rio Grande, in the extreme south.
Typically, the winter in Brazil is the driest season, though not everywhere. The
rains in July are abundant in the small area north of the equator, in the states of Roraima and Amapá (see Oiapoque, Boa Vista, Macapá) and in the easternmost part of the coast (see Natal, Joao Pessoa, Recife, Maceió). Instead, in the Amazon forest, even though there is no real dry season, the rains are less abundant than in the previous months. In the center-south, the rains are generally rare, except in the southernmost states (Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina), where the clash between air masses produces disturbances.
In the south there can be
cold air irruptions, which can bring the night temperature down to about freezing. Sometimes, in the southern cities located at hill altitude (see Curitiba, Passo Fundo, São Joaquim, Lages), it can even snow.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming in the center-north, it is all in all acceptable but not warm at the height of the Tropic (see Rio De Janeiro), while it is cold in the south.
While in the north, crossed by the Equator, the
day lasts 12 hours all year round, in the center-south, June and July are the months in which the days are shortest, and they last 10 hours in the far south.
