October is an autumn month in Turkey, and it is very mild on the north coast, very mild during the day but with cold nights on the plateau, and still warm and sunny on the south coast. Rainfall increases compared to previous months, especially in the north.
On the plateau, the
average temperature is 13.5 °C (56 °F) in Ankara, at 900 metres (2,950 feet), 13 °C (55.5 °F) in Cappadocia (see Kayseri), just above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft), while it is lower in areas at higher altitudes (see Erzurum, Van). On the Black Sea coast, the average is 17 °C (62.5 °F) in the western part (see Istanbul) and 17.5 °C (63.5 °F) in the eastern part (see Trabzon). On the Aegean coast (see Izmir), the average is around 18.5 °C (65.5 °F), while on the southern coast, it is 21.5 °C (70.5 °F) in Antalya, and reaches up to 23/24 °C (73/75 °F) in the eastern part (see Mersin, Alexandretta).
At times, it can still get
very hot, especially in the first half of the month, in particular, the temperature can reach or exceed 35 °C (95 °F) in the inland valleys of the west, such as that of the Meander or Büyük Menderes river (see Denizli, Pamukkale), on the coasts and plains of the south (see Antalya, Mersin, Adana), and also in the south-east, on the Kurdistan plateau (see Diyarbakir).
As regards to
rainfall, as mentioned, it increases compared to the previous months. The rainiest area is the northernmost one, in particular, the eastern part of the Black Sea coast (see Trabzon), and even more so the easternmost one, on the border with Georgia (see Rize), where 300 mm (12 in) fall in month and the climate is almost oceanic.
In October, you can still swim on the southern coast (see Antalya, Mersin), while on the Aegean and Black Sea coasts, the
sea is by now very cool if not cold.
