March is the first month of spring in Türkiye. However, the climate is still quite cold on the Anatolian plateau, especially in the eastern part and at high altitudes. Furthermore, cold periods are still possible, especially in the first half of the month. On the coasts, the climate is quite mild on the Black Sea coast, and very mild on the southern coast (see Antalya, Mersin).
On the plateau, the
average temperature is 6 °C (43 °F) in Ankara, at 900 metres (2,950 feet), and in Cappadocia (see Kayseri), just above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft), while it is around freezing above 1,500 meters (4,900 feet, see Erzurum, Van). On the Black Sea coast (see Istanbul, Trabzon) the average is 8.5/9 °C (47/48 °F), on the Aegean Sea coast (see Izmir) it is around 12 °C (53.5 °F), while on the southern coast (see Mersin) it reaches up to 15 °C (59 °F).
As mentioned, sometimes there can still be
cold waves, during which it can rain with very low temperatures or even snow in Istanbul, especially in the first part of the month, while on the plateau, in addition to snowfall, there may be frost, down to around -10 °C (14 °F) in Ankara, -15 °C (5 °F) in Cappadocia, and -20 °C (-4 °F) in the eastern part.
As for the
rains, they are generally quite weak on the plateau, while on the coasts they are moderate to relatively abundant, but locally they are also abundant, above 150 millimeters or 6 inches (see Rize, in the easternmost part of the Black Sea coast).
