April is a spring month in Turkey, and is characterized by mild temperatures on the northern coast and very mild on the southern one, while on the Anatolian plateau it is still cold at night. The rains are quite frequent, although less so than in previous months.
On the plateau, the
average temperature is 10.5/11 °C (51/52 °F) in Ankara, at 900 metres (2,950 feet), and in Cappadocia (see Kayseri), just above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft), while it is lower in the areas located at higher altitudes (see Erzurum, Van). On the Black Sea coast (see Istanbul, Trabzon) the average is around 12 °C (53.5 °F), on the Aegean Sea coast (see Izmir) it is around 15 °C (59 °F), while on the southern coast (see Mersin, Alexandretta) it reaches up to 18/19 °C (64/66 °F).
Sometimes, especially in the first half of the month,
cold air can still arrive, which can bring cold and rainy days on the north coast (see Istanbul, Trabzon), and also some snowfalls and lows below freezing on the plateau (see Ankara, Van, Erzurum).
Instead, the southerly wind can already bring
hot days, with highs above 30 °C (86 °F), in the lowland areas of the south-east (see Mersin, Adana, Alessandretta), but also in some stretches of the north coast, due to a föhn effect (see Trabzon).
As for the
rains, they are moderate and well distributed, given that in the rainiest areas, with a Mediterranean climate, they decrease compared to the winter months, while on the plateau, where the winter was a fairly dry season, they increase.
In the easternmost part of the Black Sea coast (see Rize), which is very rainy, April and May are the only months when less than 100 mm (4 in) of rain fall in the month.
