October is the second autumn month in the Northern Hemisphere. In Mexico, a very large country crossed by the Tropic of Cancer in the central part, September was still a hot and rainy month, while in October, both temperatures and rainfall decrease significantly in the central-northern part.
However, the
temperature is high at low altitude almost everywhere, except on the northwest coast, exposed to the Pacific, where a cold current flows (see Tijuana, Ensenada).
In the northern highlands (see Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua) it is cool at night, and sometimes it can even be cold, especially in the second half of the month, however, in inland areas and at low altitudes, there can still be
heat waves, during which the temperature can reach 40 °C (104 °F).
Instead, in the south, in the
tierras frìas (see Mexico City), the temperature is not too high because it is mitigated by the altitude.
The
rains are rare in the north and on the California peninsula, however, this is the last month in which thunderstorms can form in the Chihuahuan desert, carried by moist air from the Pacific Ocean ("North American Monsoon").
In the center-south, the rains are quite frequent, and are abundant in the easternmost part, i.e. in Cancún and in the Riviera Maya, as well as in Chiapas (see Palenque). In fact, these areas can receive additional rainfall from
hurricanes: they mainly affect the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the southern Pacific coast, but sometimes they can also affect the north-west, i.e. the California peninsula, or they can penetrate inland. October is the last month of the period when hurricanes are most frequent.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming everywhere, except in the northern part of the Pacific coast (see Tijuana, Ensenada), where it is very cool due to the already mentioned cold current.
