March is the first month of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Mexico, a very large country crossed by the Tropic of Cancer in the central part, it is generally a dry and sunny month.
The
temperature is still mild on the northwest coast, exposed to the Pacific, where a cold current flows (see Tijuana, Ensenada), while in the highlands it is a little warmer than in winter, however, there is a strong temperature difference between night and day.
Although more rarely than in winter, the
Norte can still blow from the United States, a cold wind capable of abruptly lowering the temperature, especially in the center-north and in the first half of the month, bringing even snowfall and frost in the mountains.
Instead, especially in inland areas and at low altitudes,
heat waves can occur, during which the temperature can exceed 35 °C (95 °F), although these will be more frequent in the coming months.
As mentioned, March in Mexico is a
dry month, indeed, on average it is the driest month of the year. In fact, we are in the driest period, which runs from February to April. The rains are rare or very rare almost everywhere. The only areas where it rains for 5/6 days per month are northern Chiapas (see Palenque), where in practice there is no really dry season, and the north-west, in the western part of Baja California (see Tijuana, Ensenada), where the climate has Mediterranean characteristics, and from December to March it can sometimes rain.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming on the southern coast, facing the Pacific, roughly from Puerto Vallarta to the southeast (see Manzanillo, Acapulco, Puerto Escondido, Salina Cruz).
On the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, the sea reaches 23 °C (73 °F) at the height of the Tropic (see Tampico), while in Cancún and the Riviera Maya it is warmer, around 26 °C (79 °F).
Instead, to the west, in the Baja California peninsula, the sea is cold in the northern part, where the aforementioned cold current flows, while it is cool, around 21 °C (70 °F), in the southern tip (see Los Cabos).
