April is the second month of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Mexico, a very large country crossed by the Tropic of Cancer in the central part, it is generally a
hot, dry and sunny month.
The lowest
temperature in the plains is recorded on the north-western coast, exposed to the Pacific, where a cold current flows (see Tijuana, Ensenada), while on the highlands it is cool at night (see Mexico City).
Although more rarely than in winter and in March, the
Norte can still blow from the United States, a cold wind capable of abruptly lowering the temperature, especially in the north and in the first half of the month. In these cases, in the Chihuahuan desert (see Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua), the night temperature can reach around 0 °C (32 °F).
Instead, especially in inland areas and at low altitudes,
heat waves can occur, during which the temperature can reach 40 °C (104 °F).
As mentioned, March in Mexico is a
dry month. Indeed, we are in the driest period of the year, which runs from February to April. The rains are rare or very rare almost everywhere.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming along the entire coast of the Gulf of Mexico, although in the northernmost part (see Matamoros), the water temperature is 23 °C (73 °F). Instead, the sea temperature is 25 °C (77 °F) in the southernmost part (see Veracruz), and 26.5 °C (80 °F) in Cancún and the Riviera Maya.
On the Pacific coast, the sea temperature is 23 °C (73 °F) near Culiacán, while it is 24 °C (75 °F) in Mazatlán, in the Tropic of Cancer. In the southernmost part (see Acapulco, Puerto Escondido, Salina Cruz) the sea is pleasantly warm all year round.
Instead, to the west, in the Baja California peninsula, the sea is cold in the northern part, where the aforementioned cold current flows, while it is a little cool, 22 °C (71.5 °F), in the southern tip (see Los Cabos).
