February is the second month of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In India, a large country crossed by the Tropic of Cancer in the center-north, the temperature already increases significantly compared to January. However, February is generally a dry and sunny month, very mild in the far north (though sometimes with cold nights), and hot (and in some areas already very hot) in the south.
However, in the north, in the mountains at the foot of the Himalayas (see Srinagar) it is cold, and at the highest altitudes there is perpetual snow.
In the north, in the Indo-Gangetic plain, the average
temperature is 15 °C (59 °F) in the far north (see Amritsar), and 17.5 °C (63.5 °F) in New Delhi. Nights can be cold, and fog can form at night and in the early morning, although less often than in the period from mid-December to mid-January. Furthermore, this is a very
polluted area, especially in winter.
In the center-south, temperatures are higher, and the daily average reaches 28 °C (82 °F) in the hottest areas, namely, the south-western coast (see Mangalore, Kochi, Trivandrum) and the inland areas of Tamil Nadu (see Madurai).
Anyway, throughout the center-south it can already get
very hot, in fact the temperature can exceed 35 °C (95 °F), especially in the second part of the month.
As regards to the
rain, as mentioned, February is generally a dry month, in fact, we are in the period of the winter monsoon.
However, in the mountains of the north-west (see Srinagar), and more rarely in the northernmost part of the plain (see Amritsar), disturbances can pass from the west, bringing rain (and snowfall in the mountains). Furthermore, in the north-east (see North Lakhimpur) the first showers start to occur.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming everywhere, even in the northernmost areas (in Gujarat, i.e. in the north-west, on the Arabian Sea, and in West Bengal, i.e. in the north-east, on the Bay of Bengal), the water temperature is 23/24 °C (73/75 °F). Instead, in the south the sea is pleasantly warm, in fact the water temperature is around 28 °C (82 °F).
