Chile - weather in June

Map with cities - Chile

In Chile, June is the first winter month.

North

In the northern part of the coast, where we find the Atacama desert (see Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta), temperatures are very mild, with a daily average ranging from 15 °C to 17.5 °C (59 to 63.5 °F). Although it never rains, low clouds and fogs can form, which can deposit moisture on the ground. Even in the northernmost part, the ocean is a bit cold for swimming.
In the inland areas of the north, occupied by a plateau and the Andes (see Calama, San Pedro de Atacama), it's always sunny. The diurnal temperature range is very wide, it gets cold at night, and at the temperature can drop below freezing.

Center

In the central part of the coast (see Valparaiso, Viña del Mar), the average daily temperature is around 12 °C (53.5 °F). In Santiago, in the inland areas of the center, the daily average is 10 °C (50 °F), moreover, the temperature range is high, so it gets cold at night. In this area, the rains are quite frequent and abundant, especially on the coast. South of Santiago, the rains gradually increase, and are decidedly frequent and abundant.

South

In the south, the temperature is progressively colder: the daily average ranges from 8.5 °C (47 °F) in Valdivia to 2 °C (35.5 °F) in Punta Arenas. The rains are generally frequent and abundant, except in the more sheltered areas, located to the east of the mountains (see Balmaceda, Punta Arenas), where they are moderate.
In the southern part of the Andes heavy snowfalls occur, but in the far south it can sometimes snow even at sea level.

In the Southern Hemisphere, June is the month with the shortest days, and June 21 is the winter solstice. In the extreme south, the day lasts less than 8 hours.
