Chile - weather in July

Map with cities - Chile

In Chile, July is the central month of winter and is the coldest of the year.

North

In the northern part of the coast, where we find the Atacama desert (see Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta), temperatures are very mild, with a daily average ranging from 14 °C to 16.5 °C (57 to 61.5 °F). Although it never rains, low clouds and fogs can form, which can deposit moisture on the ground. Even in the northernmost part, the ocean is a bit cold for swimming.
In the inland areas of the north, occupied by a plateau and the Andes (see Calama, San Pedro de Atacama), it's always sunny. The diurnal temperature range is very wide, it gets cold at night, and at the temperature can drop below freezing.

Center

In the central part of the coast (see Valparaiso, Viña del Mar), the average daily temperature is around 12 °C (53.5 °F). In Santiago, in the inland areas of the center, the daily average is 9.5 °C (49 °F), moreover, the temperature range is high, so it gets cold at night. In this area, the rains are quite frequent and abundant, especially on the coast. South of Santiago, the rains gradually increase, and are decidedly frequent and abundant.

South

In the south, the temperature is progressively colder: the daily average ranges from 7.5 °C (45.5 °F) in Valdivia to 2 °C (35.5 °F) in Punta Arenas. The rains are generally frequent and abundant, except in the more sheltered areas, located to the east of the mountains (see Balmaceda, Punta Arenas), where they are moderate.
In the southern part of the Andes heavy snowfalls occur, but in the far south it can sometimes snow even at sea level.

In the south the days are quite short, and in the extreme south the day lasts about 8 hours.
