December in Bolivia is the first summer month, although in the north the summer actually starts in November.
In all the
plains, both in the north, occupied by the forest, where it is hot all year round (see Cobija, Riberalta), and in the center-south, in the Gran Chaco, occupied by the savannah, it is a hot, muggy and rainy month. Sometimes it can be very hot, and the temperature can reach 35/37 °C (95/99 °F) in the north and 40 °C (104 °F) in the center-south.
In the
Andes (see La Paz, Sucre), where the temperature varies according to the altitude, in December, the mildest and rainiest period of the year begins, although the rainiest month is usually January. However, the rains are usually not abundant, but they are frequent. The least rainy area is the western one, near the border with Chile and Peru (see Lake Titicaca and the Salar de Uyuni). However, at high altitudes it gets cold at night, and above 3,500 meters (11,500 feet), the temperature can drop below freezing.
Although we are in the tropics, so the length of the
day does not vary much over the course of the year, in December and January, the day is about an hour longer than in June and in July in the north, and an hour and a half longer in the south.
