March is still a summer month in the north of Argentina, which is crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn, while in the south-central it is the first month of autumn.
In the north (see Formosa, Resistencia, Santiago Del Estero), the average daily temperature is still above 25 °C (77 °F). In Buenos Aires, in the north-central, it is still warm, and there can be summer-like days, especially in the first part. In Patagonia, March is a temperate month, with pleasantly warm days, and daily averages of 17/18 °C (63/64 °F). In the extreme south, in Tierra del Fuego, the average drops to about 9 °C (48 °F).
If we exclude Tierra del Fuego, which has a decidedly colder climate,
heat waves can still occur, especially in the center-north, with highs equal to or higher than 35 °C (95 °F).
The
southerly winds can bring rapid drops in temperature, which can go down to the freezing point or below at night in the south, while in Buenos Aires it can drop to around 10 °C (50 °F).
The
rains are still abundant in the north, where they occur in the form of downpours or thunderstorms. The latter are also quite frequent in Buenos Aires. In Patagonia, which has an arid and windy climate, the rains are quite rare, while in the extreme south, in Tierra del Fuego, where disturbances from the Pacific pass throughout the year, the rains are quite frequent.
In the northernmost part of the
Andes, where the rains occur only in summer, in March they are by now rare. However, it gets cold at night, and above 3,000 meters (9,800 ft), at night the temperature can drop below freezing.
In the southern part of the Andes, the greater part of which lies in Chile, it can sometimes rain. Furthermore, at the same altitude the temperature is lower, so much so that there are glaciers at fairly low altitudes.
As happens all over the world in the months of the equinox, the
day and the night last approximately 12 hours everywhere.
