On the top of Mount Cimone there is a
mountain climate, cold in winter and cool in summer, and windy for many days a year.
With its 2,165 meters (7,103 feet), Mount Cimone is the highest peak in the northern Apennines, and is located in Emilia-Romagna, in the province of Modena, and a short distance from the border with Tuscany. The municipalities of Fiumalbo,
Sestola, Fanano, Riolunato and Montecreto are located in the area.
In
winter, during cold spells, there can be polar cold conditions, with winds of 100 kph (62 mph) or even more. The coldest record is -22.2 °C (-8 °F) and was set in January 1981. In January 1985, there was a day with a maximum of -19.6 °C (-3.3 °F).
On average, 250 cm (98 in) of snow fall on Monte Cimone every year. It typically snows from November to April. Sometimes it can snow even in June and September. The only months in which the temperature does not drop below freezing are July and August.
Fog is frequent throughout the year (or rather, clouds that hang over the top of the mountain).
In
summer, the weather is often good in the morning, then around midday, cloud cover increases and thunderstorms can break out.
During heat waves, when the temperature in the lowlands exceeds 35 °C (95 °F), here it can reach or exceed 20 °C (68 °F). The highest record is 24 °C (75 °F), set on a few.
Best Time
You can go to Mount Cimone both in winter, perhaps for skiing, and in summer, perhaps for trekking in the mountains and to escape the heat of the plains.
The ski slopes range from 900 to 1,900 meters (2,900 to 6,200 feet, see Pian Cavallaro). You can usually ski from December to March. However, on the ski slopes, there is not always enough snow and the temperature is not always low enough, especially in December.
