Climate chart - Catamarca
The climate of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca is subtropical semi-arid, with dry, mild winters (but during which it can get cold at night), and very hot, quite rainy summers. In summer, the rains often occur in the form of thunderstorms.
The city, capital of the province of Catamarca, is located in northern Argentina, at 28 degrees south latitude, and 500 meters (1,650 feet) above sea level.
Due to its location at the foot of the Andes, from which a wind that heat up by compression can arrive, and in a valley (to the east of the city there is a smaller mountain range), the city is particularly hot in summer, and exposed to heat waves.
However, the wind blows often, especially in spring and summer.
In winter, from mid-May to mid-August, the difference in temperature between night and day is often significant. Also, although the winter is mild, there can sometimes be outbreaks of cold air from the south, during which the temperature can drop below freezing at night. This usually happens from late May to early September. The absolute record is -9 °C (16 °F), while after 1991, the temperature dropped to -7.4 °C (18.7 °F) in July 1994 and to -7.3 °C (18.9 °F) in July 2024.
Snow in Catamarca is rare, both because the winter is dry and because the sun warms the ground and raises the temperature significantly during the day. In fact, you have to wait several years to see snow. For example, a snowfall occurred at the end of June 1996 and in July 2007.
Summer, from December to February, is very hot, in fact the daily average in January is close to 28 °C (82.5 °F). Although it is the rainiest season, in no month does it exceed 100 millimeters (4 inches) on average.
Especially in spring and summer, there can be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In these cases it can also get very hot at night, in fact the minimum can remain around 30 °C (86 °F). In the worst moments the temperature can reach 45 °C (113 °F). The record is 47 °C (116.5 °F), set at the end of October 2009.

Catamarca

In the Andes to the west of Catamarca there are very high peaks. About 300 km (185 mi) to the northwest, on the border with Chile, is the Nevado Ojos del Salado, which at 6,893 meters (22,615 ft) is the second highest peak in South America (after Aconcagua) and the highest volcano in the world, while a little further south is Monte Pissis, 6,792 meters (22,283 ft) high.
This area can be reached by the Ruta Nacional 60, which passes through Tinogasta.
In this part of the Andes, the climate is semi-arid, however, in summer there can be some rain (and snow in the high mountains).

Best Time

It is difficult to find the best time to visit Catamarca, since the summer is very hot, while in winter there can be sudden changes in temperature, and at night there can be quite intense frosts. You can then choose the period from mid-April to mid-May, in autumn, when the temperature is halfway between winter and summer. In spring it can get very hot.
