August is the last month of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, which in Venezuela, a country located just north of the Equator, is the
rainy season.
The
temperatures are high, however, they are a little lower than in the spring months. On the other hand, the humidity increases the sensation of heat. The hottest area is the arid one of the north-west (see Maracaibo, Coro and the Paraguaná peninsula), where the daily average is 30/31 °C (86/88 °F).
The
rains are frequent and abundant both in the area occupied by the forest, in the macro-region called Venezuelan Guayana, and in the area occupied by the savannah, the llanos. However, in the south, the rains begin to decrease compared to June and July.
On the northern coast (see Barcelona, Maiquetía), the rains are less abundant, but still frequent. Only in the driest areas (see Coro, the Paraguaná peninsula and the Caribbean islands), the rains are still rare.
In the Caribbean Sea we are in the season of
hurricanes, which can affect the extreme north of Venezuela, though more rarely than in the central-northern Caribbean. In August, the period when they are most likely begins, which lasts until October.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming.
