April is a first month of spring in the United States.
Temperatures are still quite low in the northern inland areas, in the Great Plains (see Fargo), in the Great Lakes area (see Chicago) and in New England (see Portland in Maine), where sometimes it can still snow. At the beginning of the month, the Great Lakes, bordering Canada, may still be partially frozen.
In the central area (see Kansas City, New York, Washington), the temperatures are mild, however, the weather is unstable and it can still get cold, especially in the first half of the month.
There are several
winter sports resorts in the Rocky Mountains, and you can still ski in April.
Precipitation> is still abundant in the Northwest, in the northern part of the Pacific coast, and quite frequent in the Puget Strait (see Seattle), even though it decreases compared to the previous months. In the south of the coast (see Los Angeles), the rains are already rare, and even more so in the deserts of the south-west (see Phoenix), where it is already hot.
For the rest, the rains are quite frequent in a large part of the territory due to the collision of air masses.
Warm air from the south can bring the temperature above 25 °C (77 °F) in the north, especially in the second half of the month, and above 30 °C (86 °F) in the center-south. In addition,
thunderstorms can break out.
April through June is the time when
tornadoes are most frequent in east-central United States. They mainly develop along two directions: the "Tornado Alley", from South Dakota to northern Texas (north/south), and the "Dixie Alley", from Oklahoma to Ohio (south-west/north-east).
The
sea is warm enough for swimming in southern Florida (see Miami), while in the Gulf of Mexico it is still a bit cool.
