June is the first summer month in Turkey, and is generally a
hot and sunny month. In the inland plains (see Denizli) and in the Kurdistan plateau (see Diyarbakir) it is also very hot. However, on the Black Sea coast the rains are quite frequent, especially in the eastern part (see Trabzon, Rize), moreover, in the Thracian plain (see Edirne) and in the mountain areas thunderstorms can break out, while on the Anatolian plateau (see Ankara, Cappadocia) at night it can get more or less cool depending on the altitude.
On the plateau, the
average temperature is 20 °C (68 °F) in Ankara, at 900 metres (2,950 feet), 19 °C (66 °F) in Cappadocia (see Kayseri), just above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft), while it is lower in the areas located at higher altitudes (see Erzurum, Van). On the Black Sea coast the average is 23 °C (73.5 °F) in the western part (see Istanbul), and 21 °C (70 °F) in the eastern part (see Trabzon). On the Aegean coast (see Izmir) the average is around 25 °C (77 °F), while on the southern coast (see Antalya, Mersin) it is 26 °C (79 °F).
Sometimes, there may be
heat waves, especially in the second half of the month, in particular, the temperature can reach or exceed 40 °C (104 °F) in the inland valleys of the west, such as that of the Meander or Büyük Menderes river (see Denizli, Pamukkale), on the coasts and plains of the south (see Antalya, Adana), and also in the south-east, in the Kurdistan plateau (see Diyarbakir). On the plateau, at around 1,000 meters or 3,300 ft (see Ankara, Cappadocia), during heat waves the temperature can reach around 35 °C (95 °F).
As for the
rainfall, it is very rare on the western (see Izmir) and southern (see Antalya, Mersin) coasts, where the climate is purely Mediterranean. As mentioned, in inland areas, on the plateau and even more so in the high mountains, thunderstorms can sometimes break out.
In the eastern part of the Black Sea coast (see Trabzon), and even more so in the easternmost part, on the border with Georgia (see Rize, where 150 mm or 6 inches fall in the month), where the climate is almost oceanic, the rainfall is frequent also in this season.
In June, the
sea in Turkey is warm enough for swimming on the southern coast (see Antalya, Mersin), while on the Aegean Sea coast (see Izmir) and on the Black Sea coast (see v. Istanbul, Trabzon), is still a bit cool.
Turkey is located at medium latitudes, however, in June the
days are quite long, especially in the north, where the sun stays above the horizon for about 15 hours a day.
In the Northern Hemisphere, June is the month when the days are longest, and June 21st is the summer solstice.
