June is the first summer month in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Mexico, a very large country crossed by the Tropic of Cancer in the central part, it is generally a
hot month, (and in some areas very hot), dry and sunny in the north, muggy and rainy in the south.
The
temperature is pleasantly warm on the northwest coast, exposed to the Pacific, where a cold current flows (see Tijuana, Ensenada). Instead, in the south, in the
tierras frìas (see Mexico City), the temperature is not too high because it is mitigated by the altitude.
For the rest, June is a hot month, muggy in the south, where the rainy season begins, and torrid in the deserts of the north, both in the inland areas of the Sonoran desert (see Mexicali) and in the highlands of the Chihuahuan desert (see Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua). In the latter area, June is the hottest month of the year.
Especially in inland areas and at low altitudes,
heat waves can occur, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In particular, in the central-northern inland areas (see Hermosillo) and in the north-west, in the Yuma desert (see Mexicali), extremely high temperatures can be reached, even more than 45 °C (113 °F).
The
rains are very rare or completely absent in the northwest, on the California peninsula. In the Chihuahuan desert (see Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua) and on the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico (see Matamoros, Tampico), although the rains are rare, showers and thunderstorms begin to occur.
Instead, in the south the rains are abundant.
The
hurricane season begins in June, even though they are still rare, and will become more probable in the following months, and in particular, from August to October.
Mexico is located at fairly low latitudes, however, June is the month with the longest
days, about 14 hours in the north and 13 hours in the south. June 21 is the summer solstice, i.e. the longest day of the year, in the Northern Hemisphere.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming everywhere, except in the north-central part of the Pacific coast (see Tijuana, Ensenada, Guerrero Negro), where it is cold due to the already mentioned cold current.
