May in Ecuador is a transition month between the warmest, rainiest period (February-April) and the coolest, driest period (June-August) of the year.
However, in the Amazon forest (see Nuevo Rocafuerte), where the climate is equatorial, this month too is
hot, muggy and rainy.
In the northern part of the coast (see Valdez, Esmeraldas, Atacames), May is still a hot and rainy month, even though the rains decrease a little compared to the previous months.
Instead, in the central-southern part of the coast (see Manta, Salinas, Playas), the rains are already very rare, under the influence of the cool Humboldt current. However, due to this current, the sky is often cloudy.
In the
Andes (see Quito, Cuenca), where the temperature decreases with altitude, the rains are still quite frequent, though less than in the previous months.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming both in the north and in the south, however, in the north it is a little warmer.
