March in Ecuador is a
hot, muggy and rainy month in the northern part of the coast (see Valdez, Esmeraldas, Atacames), in the inland areas west of the Andes (see Guayaquil), and in the Amazon forest to the east (see Nuevo Rocafuerte). The rains are particularly abundant in the foothills of the Andes, both in the west (see Santo Domingo de los Colorados) and in the east (see Puyo).
Instead, in the central-southern part of the coast (see Manta, Salinas, Playas), the rains are quite rare, due to the Humboldt current. However, we are in the rainiest time of the year (as well as the hottest), and in particular, the rains can increase during El Niño years. Furthermore, the sky is often cloudy here as well.
In the
Andes (see Quito, Cuenca), where the temperature decreases with altitude, the rains increase a little compared to the previous months, because the sun passes its zenith at noon during the month, proceeding from south to north.
The
sea is warm enough to swim in anywhere, and furthermore, in the center-south we are in the period when the sea is warmest.
