August in Colombia is the last month of the second
relatively dry season in the Andes, however, although the rains are not abundant, they are more frequent than in the other dry period (December to February).
In the southern hemisphere it is the last month of winter, but this only affects the extreme south of the country, which is near or south of the Equator. Actually, we are in the least rainy period in the southern part of the Pacific coast (see Tumaco, where it is the least rainy month of the year), of the Andes (see Popayán, Ipiales) and of the Amazon forest (see Leticia), even though there is no dry season.
The
rains are frequent and abundant in the central-northern part of the Pacific coast (see Chocó department). In Quibdó, the rainiest city in the world, this is the wettest month of the year. The rains are also abundant in the east, in the savannah area called
Llanos (see Arauca, Puerto Carreño, San José del Guaviare), although a little less than in the previous months.
In the northern hemisphere we are in
summer, and on the islands of San Andrés and Providencia, in the Caribbean Sea, we are in the hot, muggy and rainy period. We are also in the hurricane season in the Caribbean Sea, and in August, the period when they are most likely begins.
The only area with little rain is the arid peninsula of la Guajira (see Riohacha).
Temperatures in Colombia vary little over the months, and at low altitudes it is hot all year round, while in the Andes the temperature decreases with altitude. In the inland areas of the north, at low altitudes, but also on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, it can get
very hot.
The
sea in Colombia is warm enough for swimming all year round, both in the north (Caribbean Sea) and in the west (Pacific Ocean).
