In Chile, September is the first month of spring.
North
In the
northern part of the coast, where we find the Atacama desert (see Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta), temperatures are very mild, with a daily average ranging from 15 °C to 17 °C (59 to 62.5 °F). Although it never rains, low clouds and fogs can form, which can deposit moisture on the ground. Even in the northernmost part, the ocean is a bit cold for swimming.
In the inland areas of the north, occupied by a plateau and the
Andes (see Calama, San Pedro de Atacama), it's always sunny. The diurnal temperature range is very wide, it gets cold at night, and at the temperature can drop below freezing.
Center
In the
central part of the coast (see Valparaiso, Viña del Mar), the average daily temperature is around 13 °C (55.5 °F). In Santiago, in the inland areas of the center, the daily average is similar, but the temperature range is high, so it gets cold at night. In this area, where it rains substantially only in winter, the rains are already rare, however, south of Santiago, the rains are still quite frequent.
South
In the
south, the temperature is progressively colder: the daily average ranges from 9.5 °C (49 °F) in Valdivia to 5 °C (41 °F) in Punta Arenas. Sometimes, cold air from the south can produce rapid decreases in temperature, which can drop below freezing, especially in the first half of the month. The
rains are generally frequent and abundant (though less than in autumn), except in the more sheltered areas, located to the east of the mountains (see Balmaceda, Punta Arenas), where they are moderate.
In the southern part of the
Andes heavy snowfalls occur, but in the far south it can sometimes snow even at sea level.
As happens all over the world in the equinox months, the
day and the night last approximately 12 hours everywhere.
