November is the last autumn month in Canada.
Average
temperatures are already several degrees below freezing in the north, in the large areas having a polar or subpolar climate, in the provinces of Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (see Alert, Inuvik, Yellowknife). In the south, the averages are a few degrees below freezing in the west-central, in the Great Prairies (see Edmonton, Calgary, Regina), while they are still above freezing in the southeast, in the southernmost cities (Montreal, Toronto) and on both coasts.
Precipitation (rain or snow) is generally light in the north, in the Arctic and Subarctic areas, where it usually occurs in the form of light snow. Even in large prairies, precipitation is quite scarce. In the rest of the territory, on the contrary, the rains are frequent, so much so that November is on average the wettest month in Canada. In particular, the rains are definitely abundant in the far west, on the coast of British Columbia (see Vancouver), overlooking the Pacific, where the climate is oceanic and it doesn't get very cold.
In the course of the month there may be
cold spells, during which the temperature can reach very low values, though not as in winter: -30 °C (-22 °F) or less in the polar areas, -20 °C (-4 °F) or below in the Great Prairies, and -10 °C (14 °F) or lower in the southeast.
On the other hand, the
chinook, a mild, dry wind capable of melting snow, can blow on the eastern side of the mountains.
The
days in November get shorter, and in the far north, near the Pole (see Alert), the sun never rises.
