Australia - weather in July

July is the central month of winter in Australia, and is almost everywhere the coolest (or coldest) of the year. However, it is a warm month in the north, very mild in the center (but with quite cold nights), and quite mild in the south, but with cold and windy periods. Rainfall is rare or very rare in the center-north, and more frequent in the south.

In the tropical north, July is a hot and dry month in the Top End of the Northern Territory (see Darwin), a little less hot and with some more rain on the coast facing north-east of Northern Queensland (see Cairns).
On the east coast (see Brisbane, Sydney), it is a very mild month during the day, but with quite cold nights, and gradually cooler as you proceed south.
In the Outback, the vast arid or desert inland area (see Alice Springs, Oodnadatta), the days are very mild and the sun shines, while nights are often cold.
In the south, in the areas where the climate is Mediterranean (see Perth, Adelaide), it is a mild month, but with quite frequent rain.
In the south-east, in the areas where the climate is oceanic (see Melbourne, Tasmania), the temperature is very cool and the weather is variable, sometimes cold and windy, with quite frequent rain.

As regards to the temperatures, the daily average is 25 °C (77 °F) in the Top End of the Northern Territory (see Darwin) and 21.5 °C (70.5 °F) in northern Queensland (see Cairns), while it drops to 15 °C (59 °F) in Brisbane, on the east coast, and to 13/14 °C (55/57 °F) in the desert areas south of the tropic (see Oodnadatta, Meekatharra), it is 13.5 °C (56.5 °F) in Perth and Sydney, while it drops to 10 °C (50 °F) in Melbourne, in the south-east, and to 8.5 °C (47.5 °F) in Hobart, Tasmania.
In the desert it can still get hot in fact the temperature can exceed 30 °C (86 °F).
Instead, in the south and in the central-southern inland areas, air masses of Antarctic origin can bring cold at night, with lows of around 0 °C (32 °F), and around -5 °C (23 °F) in the capital, Canberra. Sometimes it can even snow in Canberra, but especially in the Australian Alps and in the Tasmanian Heights. In the south-east, in the states of New South Wales and Victoria, there are also resorts where you can ski.

As for the rain, it is very rare in the Top End of the Northern Territory (see Darwin) and in the inland arid and desert areas (see Alice Springs, Oodnadatta).
On the east coast (see Brisbane, Sydney), which has a fairly rainy climate for most of the year, the rains are not very frequent, in fact, the driest period of the year begins in July, which will last until September.
In the vast arid areas of the Outback, rainfall is very rare.
In the south, in the areas where the climate is Mediterranean (see Perth, Adelaide), winter is the rainiest season, and rainfall is abundant in the south-west, ie in Perth and in the area south of the city.
In the south-east, with an oceanic climate (see Melbourne, Tasmania), the rains are quite frequent, and in the western part of Tasmania they are also abundant.

In July, the sea in Australia is warm enough for swimming in the area north of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Australia is located at mid-low latitudes, however, in July the days are quite short in the south, where the sun remains above the horizon for about 10 hours or less.
