Argentina - weather in January

January in Argentina is the central month of summer and the hottest month of the year. In the far north the heat is intense, in fact the average daily temperature is about 28 °C (82.5 °F).
In Buenos Aires and Rosario, in the center-north, it is hot as well, with a daily average of 25 °C (77 °F). In the center-south, in Patagonia, the climate becomes progressively cooler, so much so that the average drops to 20.5 °C (69 °F) in Puerto Madryn and Comodoro Rivadavia. In the extreme south, in Tierra del Fuego, it is cool even in this month, in fact, the average temperature in Ushuaia is 10 °C (50 °F).
In this month there can be heat waves, during which the temperature can exceed 40 °C (104 °F) in the north, and 35 °C (95 °F) in the center-south.
On the other hand, the southerly winds can bring rapid decreases in temperature, so much so that at night it can get cold in the center-south, while a bit of cool air can also arrive in the north.
The rains are abundant in the north, where they occur in the form of downpours or thunderstorms. In Buenos Aires, thunderstorms are quite frequent as well, although they don't reduce the hours of sunshine that much. In Patagonia, which has an arid and windy climate, the rains are quite rare, while in the extreme south, in Tierra del Fuego, where the weather disturbances from the Pacific pass even in summer, the rains are quite frequent.
In the northernmost part of the Andes, the landscape at high altitudes is desert, however, the summer is the only season when rain can sometimes occur. Although it is the warmest time of the year, it gets cold at night, and above 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) the temperature at night can drop below freezing.
In the southern part of the Andes, which is much greener, the summer is a relatively dry season, especially on the Argentine side. However, at the same altitude the temperature is much lower, so much so that glaciers are found at fairly low altitudes.
In the south the days are very long, in fact the sun stays above the horizon for 16 hours or more.
