The climate of El Aaiún (Laâyoune) is
subtropical desert, very mild in winter and hot in summer.
The city is located in the north of Western Sahara, about 20 km (12 mi) from the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, where a cold current flows. The distance from the coast is enough to make the climate warmer than on the coast, where Laayoune Plage (also called El Aaiún Port or El Marsa) is located.
