In Vinh there is a subtropical climate, with very mild winters and very hot, muggy summers. The sun doesn't shine very often. The rainiest period is from August to November.
The city is located in north-central Vietnam, in Nghệ An province, at nearly 19 degrees north latitude, on the banks of the Ca River and close to the coast. About 55 km (35 mi) to the west is the border with Laos.

The winter, from December to February, is mild, however, the sky is often cloudy, especially in January and February, and drizzle can occur.
Winter averages are a little higher than in the far north of Vietnam, however, sometimes there can be very cool periods here as well, with lows around 8/9 °C (46/49 °F) and highs around 15 °C (59 °F). More rarely, it can even get cold for a few days, and highs can drop to around 11/12 °C (52/54 °F). In January 2016, there was a day with a minimum of 5 °C (41 °F) and a maximum of 8 °C (46.5 °F).
The summer, from May to September, is hot and muggy. In the first period of the monsoon, from May to July, the rains are not very frequent, even though they are a little more frequent than on the central-southern part of the coast. The only very rainy period goes from August to November, with a maximum in September and October.
From April to September, it can get very hot, and the temperature can reach 38/40 °C (100/104 °F). In April 2019 it reached 41 °C (106 °F).

Vinh

The city can be hit by typhoons, the tropical cyclones of Southeast Asia, and it should be remembered that the coast is the area most at risk. Typically, typhoons pass in this area from late April to early November, with a maximum from July to October.
