The city is the capital of Quảng Bình province and is located on the central-northern coast of Vietnam (called Bắc Trung Bộ), at 17 degrees north latitude, on the banks of the Nhật Lệ River.
About 35 km (21 mi) to the northwest is Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park.
To the west, on the border with Laos, are mountains that reach 1,600 meters (5,250 feet).
The
winter, from December to February, is very mild, however, the sky is often cloudy and
drizzle can occur.

From April to September, it can get
very hot, and the temperature can reach 38/40 °C (100/104 °F).
The city can be hit by
typhoons, the tropical cyclones of Southeast Asia, and it should be remembered that the coast is the area most at risk. Typically, typhoons pass in this area from late April to early November, with a maximum from July to October.
