Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
Tashkent has a
continental climate (according to the Köppen classification, Mediterranean climate with hot summers - Csa), with quite cold, rainy winters and very hot, sunny summers.
Tashkent (or Toshkent) is a city of 3,000,000 inhabitants, the capital of Uzbekistan, located in the east of the country, near the border with Kazakhstan, at 450 meters (1,500 feet) above sea level and 41 degrees north latitude.
The city is located on the ancient Silk Road.
To the east are
mountains. About 55 km (35 mi) to the northeast, at 1,600 meters (5,250 feet) above sea level, is the resort of
Amirsoy, in the Chatkal Mountains, belonging to the western part of the Tian Shan. About 10 km (6 mi) northeast and 1,450 meters (4,760 ft) above sea level is
Chimgan, the most popular ski resort in Uzbekistan.
Even further northeast, in an area surrounded by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and China, are the
Ugam Mountains, protected in the
Ugam-Chatkal National Park, with peaks that exceed 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) and are covered with perennial snow.
To south are instead the Qurama mountains.
Precipitation in Tashkent is not abundant, since it amounts to 460 millimeters (18 inches) per year, however, it is more abundant than in the other cities of Uzbekistan, due to the proximity of the mountains. It occurs mostly from November to May, while in summer, it almost never rains.
The
winter, from December to February, is quite cold, with an average January temperature of around 3 °C (37.5 °F).
However, the city can be affected by very different air masses. This means that there are periods in which it can rain, and others in which it can snow.
The winds from the south can bring mild periods, in which the temperature can reach, and sometimes exceed, 15 °C (59 °F).
During periods of stable weather,
fog can form.
During
cold waves, the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F) or even below, although this doesn't happen every year. The record is -29.5 °C (-21.1 °F), set in December 1930. The last time it fell below -20 °C (-4 °F) was in January 1969, with -23.1 °C (-9.6 °F). That winter, the daily average was -6.6 °C (20.1 °F) in January and -6.9 °C (19.6 °F) in February.
In spring, from
March to May, the clash of air masses makes wind, rain and temperature swings frequent.
Summer, from June to August, is very hot and sunny. The average in July is 28 °C (82.5 °F).
On the hottest days, the temperature reaches or exceeds 40 °C (104 °F).
The record is 44.6 °C (112.3 °F), set in July 1997. In July 2019, the average maximum was 39 °C (102.2 °F).
