The climate of Namangan is
semi-arid continental (according to the Köppen classification, cold semi-arid or steppe climate - BSk), with cold winters and very hot, sunny summers.
Namangan is a city of 700,000 inhabitants, the second in Uzbekistan, located in the far east of the country, in the northern part of the Fergana Valley, at 450 meters (1,475 feet) above sea level and 41 degrees north latitude.
Near the city, the Kara Darya (Qaradaryo) and Naryn rivers join to form the Syr Darya.
To the north, in Kyrgyzstan, lies the western part of the Tian Shan mountain range.
Precipitation is decidedly scarce, amounting to 205 millimeters (8 inches) per year. Summer is the driest season.
The
winter, from December to February, is cold, with an average January temperature of around 1 °C (34 °F).
During periods of stable weather,
fog can form.
There are quite mild periods, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 10 °C (50 °F).
Due to the arid climate, both rain and snowfall are quite rare, and in any case generally not abundant.
During
cold waves, the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F) or below, although this doesn't happen every year. The last time the temperature dropped below -20 °C (-4 °F) was in February 2014, when it dropped to -20.5 °C (-5 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is very hot and sunny. The average in July is 28.5 °C (83.5 °F).
On the hottest days, the temperature reaches or exceeds 40 °C (104 °F).
The records are around 42 °C (108 °F). In July 2019 and 2023, the average maximum was 37.9 °C (100.2 °F).
