The climate of San Angelo is subtropical, with quite mild winters and very hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in west-central Texas, at 570 meters (1,870 feet) above sea level, and is windy and exposed to clashes between air masses which cause sudden changes in temperature.
The average temperature of the coldest month (January) is of 8.6 °C (47 °F), that of the warmest month (July) is of 29.3 °C (85 °F).
Precipitation amounts to 530 millimeters (20.9 inches) per year: so, it is at an intermediate level. In fact, we are halfway between the arid zone of Texas, the western one, and the rainy zone, the eastern one.

San Angelo

In winter, from December to February, the days are quite mild, but at night, the temperature drops a lot.
In addition, every now and then, there may be cold spells and snowfalls. On average, 5.5 cm (2.2 in) of snow fall per year. On the coldest days of the year, the temperature drops to -8/-10 °C (14/18 °F), but sometimes even to lower values. The record is -20.5 °C (-5 °F), recorded in December 1983. In February 2021, the thermometer touched -18.5 °C (-1.5 °F).
On the other hand, air masses from Mexico can bring the temperature to 25 °C (77 °F) or above even in the middle of winter.

The summer, from June to September, is very hot and sunny, with some thunderstorms. Despite the altitude, San Angelo is a particularly hot city. Sometimes it can get hot even in late April and in October.
On the hottest days of the year, the temperature reaches 40/41 °C (104/106 °F). The record is 43.5 °C (110 °F), set in late June 1994, in late May 2011 and in July 2020.
In 2020, the temperature reached 40.5 °C (105 °F) in late April, 41 °C (106 °F) in early May, 43.5 °C (110.5 °F) in mid-July, and 38.5 °C (101 °F) on 11 and 12 October. But in late October there was an early snowfall.

From April to June (and more rarely in autumn), tornadoes can also develop (we are actually on the edge of "Tornado Alley").
