Climate chart - Abilene (Texas)

The climate of Abilene is subtropical, with quite mild winters and very hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in north-central Texas, at 540 meters (1,770 feet) above sea level.
The climate is similar to that of Dallas, although it is less rainy and the humidity is lower. In return, temperature changes are even more intense.
In winter, from December to February, the days are quite mild, but at night, the temperature drops a lot.
In addition, every now and then, there may be cold spells and snowfalls. On average, 9.4 cm (3.7 in) of snow fall per year. On the coldest days of the year, the temperature drops to -8/-10 °C (14/18 °F), but sometimes even to lower values. The record is -21.5 °C (-6.5 °F), recorded in January 1985 and December 1989. In February 2021, the thermometer touched -20 °C (-4 °F).
On the other hand, air masses from Mexico can bring the temperature to 25 °C (77 °F) or above even in the middle of winter.
The summer, from June to September, is very hot and sunny, with some thunderstorms. Despite the altitude, Abilene is a particularly hot city. Sometimes it can get hot even in late April and in October.
On the hottest days of the year, the temperature reaches 40/41 °C (104/106 °F). The record is 43 °C (109.5 °F), recorded in July 1980 and at the end of May 2000.
In 2020, the temperature reached 35 °C (95 °F) in late April, 38.5 °C (101.5 °F) in early May, 41.5 °C (106.5 °F) in late May, and 38 °C (100 °F) on 11 and 12 October. But in late October there was an early snowfall.
From time to time, the city can be reached by the remnants of a hurricane, coming from the Gulf of Mexico or the Pacific. In general, hurricanes weaken when they penetrate inland, however, they can still bring abundant rains. The hurricane season runs from June to November, although they are more likely from August to October, with a peak in September.
From April to June (and more rarely in autumn), tornadoes can also develop (we are actually on the edge of "Tornado Alley").
The average temperature of the coldest month (January) is of 7.9 °C (46.3 °F), that of the warmest month (July) is of 29.3 °C (84.7 °F). Here are the average temperatures.
