The climate of Kharkiv (or Kharkov) is
moderately continental, with very cold winters, in which the temperature is often below freezing, and warm summers.
The city is located in northeastern Ukraine, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) away from the border with Russia.
Precipitation is not abundant, in fact, the north-east of Ukraine is not as rainy as the north-west, even though the driest part of the country is the south. Anyway, in winter, precipitation is quite frequent and generally occurs in the form of snow, while it is a bit more abundant from May to July, when it can occur in the form of thunderstorm.

Although the weather is usually not too hot, there can be very hot periods, usually of short duration, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 33/34 °C (91/93 °F). In August 2010, during an exceptional heat wave, it reached 39.8 °C (103.6 °F).
